RIVER CAUVERY

River CAUVERY is the source of living for the millions around TRICHY. In good olden days the river flows full of water through out the year. No water scarsity then. But now it is rare to see the river CAUVERY with full of water.
Neighbering state built so many dams in the river Cauvery and store the water for their agricultural purposes. So the people of Trichy is getting limited quantity of water from Cauvery. Now a days you can see the river almost dry. If the monsoon is good then we will get full of water in the river, otherwise it is always dry.

LAND MARK OF THE CITY

A massive outcrops of rock formation, 83 metres (273'), rears abrubtly out of River Cauvery plains - as if it to guard the city. Atop the rock is the famous UCHI PILLAYAR TEMPLE.

Climbing 437 steps, any one can reach that temple. The most amazing fact about the rock is: It is one of the oldest rock formation in the world (3800 million years). Half way up is the THAYUMANAVA SAMY TEMPLE which is dedicated to LORD SHIVA. This temple has a 100 pillar mandapam(hall) and vimanam covered with Gold. On the southern side, you can find several beautifull carved rock cut temples of Pallavas.

A small town covered by a fort around this rock was built by Nayaks of Madurai. Latter the English rulers developed the city. Eventhough the city is well developed in the outer side of the fort area, this fort area is still the heart of the city. The most popular business establishments are still operating here.

Now it is an Industrial City

The city is now an industrial centre that has modern Heavy Electrical (BHEL Thermal Boiler) plant and a Locomotive Construction workshop (Golden Rock Rail Way Workshop). A small arms factory (Hindustan Small Arms Factory) along side traditional cotton hand weaving and world famous Woraiyur Cigar making cottage industries. Synthetic diamonds are manufactured here. A unique Diamond market (Diamond Bazar) is active here. More than 1000 shops of original and synthetic gemstones are doing business here.

TRICHY.

In South India, In the middle of Tamil Nadu, On the banks of River Cauvery situated - the city- TRICHY. It is also known as TRICHIRAPPALLY. But it is better known and called as TRICHY by the local people.

TRICHY is an ideal base from where to explore the Temples of South India. It was an important regional capital of CHOLAS, PALLAVAS and VIJAYANAGARA dynasties from seventh to seventeenth centuries.

It's ROCKFORTRESS dominating the city, was the battle field of bitter fighting between MUSLIM, MARATHA, BRITISH and FRENCH rulers from seventeenth to nineteenth ceturies.
